Love it or hate it, Smartphones have penetrated our lives deeply. Not just adults but children also are glued to the Smartphones for long hours. As a responsible parent, it is our duty to lead by example and limit our Smartphone usage. But apart from that there can be some rules set for the children so that Smartphones make them smarter and not dumber.

Set healthy limits: Resisting the distractions of technology can be difficult for children as it is for adults. Bill and Melinda Gates did not allow their kids to use Smartphones until they were 14 and restricted the screen time when they began to use it. Allow the kids to use the Smartphones for say 20 minutes or 30 minutes in a day only.

Limit its use at night: Smartphones can be a hindrance to a good night’s sleep. It will be best to leave the phone in the living room at bedtime. The kids will follow the rule if all the members of the family follow it.

No Smartphones during get together and family meals: Use of Smartphones should not be allowed during meal times, parties or get together.  Children should be made to understand the importance of living in the real world than in the virtual world.

Encouraging constructive use: Instead of spending time on social media and chatting, children should be encouraged to utilize their time by learning a new language or solving puzzles on Smartphones. There are numerous educational apps and mind game apps that can help your child hone her metal skills.

Turning off some notifications: Each ping on your Smartphone can be a distraction. It would be a good idea to turn off some notifications like that of social media.

Taking these precautions will ensure that technology makes life better and enjoyable and not bitter for young children.
